CAT Chapter 9: Sonnet (1)
by Abo DammenThe man dressed like a commander made a gesture, signaling everyone scattered around to regroup.
He greeted Lin Si and walked toward him, saying, βDr. Lin.β
Lin Si replied, βColonel.β
The colonel immediately noticed Ling Yi and recognized him. βYouβre awake?β
Β
βThe colonel was one of his test subjects, as were nearly everyone else in this training ground.
Β
βMm,β Lin Si said, βHe will train here from now on. Start with a physical fitness test.β
Β
The colonel called out, βSvenya!β
Β
A female officer of Russian descent with sharp features walked over.
Β
βThe little angel from Capsule 97!β Her eyes lit up.
Β
The colonel instructed, βSvenya, take him for a fitness level test and create a training program.β
Β
Svenya readily agreed and led Ling Yi away.
Β
Lin Si began speaking with the colonel.
Β
βWhatβs the current training focus?β
Β
βOur designation is frontline combat personnel,β the colonel shrugged. βEvery day, itβs combat training, battle simulations, and weapons proficiency. But since deployment, we havenβt encountered a single enemy. The universe is so vast, and yet thereβs no trace of any aliens! Sometimes, I almost wish to join the landing operations team for some action.β
Β
βIn a while, Zone 5 and Zone 6 might request your teamβs assistance,β Lin Si said as they stood shoulder to shoulder. βWeβre finalizing a neural mechanical project.β
Β
βGot it,β the colonel agreed cheerfully and asked, βAre you going to have us test the machines?β
Β
βMm,β Lin Si replied coolly. βItβs bionic wearable equipment.β
Β
The colonelβs interest was instantly piqued. βDo you have the schematics?β
Β
Lin Si adjusted his wristband, projecting the design.
Β
βThe control system connects to the neural network, allowing direct machine operation without complex inputs. However, only the neural reflexes of modified bodies can currently achieve this.β
Β
The colonelβs jaw dropped in astonishment.
Β
βDoctor, thisβ¦!β he exclaimed excitedly. βThis is mecha!β
Β
Lin Si frowned slightly. βMecha?β
Β
βYes!β The colonel rubbed his hands together. βHavenβt you read sci-fi novels? Itβs like a giant robot that can fight in space.β
Β
βThe prototype could theoretically be equipped with weapons, but it lacks spacefaring capabilities. Achieving that would be highly challenging. You can discuss it further with Zheng Shu.β Lin Si turned off the projection, his expression remaining impassive as he added flatly, βI need your training data.β
Β
The colonel opened his wristband to connect to the main system and began retrieving the data.
Β
βDr. Lin is still as cold as ever,β Svenya remarked to Ling Yi when she noticed him looking back at Lin Si. βWe thought surviving a near-death experience might change him a little.β
She shrugged. βSweetheart, have you considered settling down here? Lin isnβt a good guardian. Just imagining you being raised by that wizard gives me nightmares of you turning into a cold little demon.β
Β
Ling Yi tilted his head, recalling how Lin Si had treated him over the past few days.
Β
Althoughβ¦ he often jabbed him with needles and occasionally had a bad attitude, stillβ
Β
Ling Yi didnβt know how to articulate it, so he simply shook his head. βLin Si is very good.β
Β
Svenya looked at him fondly. This innocent, beautiful little thing could effortlessly stir anyoneβs protective instincts.
Β
βAlright,β she said. βLetβs get to work. Iβve reviewed your physical data, now weβll test more practical aspects.β
Β
βBy the time Lin Si finished his business and came to check on Ling Yiβs progress, he could hear Svenyaβs voice from afar.
Β
βDarling, youβre just like a little kitten!β
Β
As he approached, Lin Si saw the spacious training room, where staggered black rubber bars rose from the floor to the ceiling.
Β
Ling Yi had one leg hooked around the highest bar, his entire body hanging upside down. Noticing Lin Siβs entrance, he bent backward at an angle impossible for most humans, climbed upward in a fluid motion, transitioned into a half-kneeling position at the top, then lightly leaped down, landing steadily in front of Lin Si and looking up at him.
Β
The sequence of movements was so smooth and swift that it was nearly soundless.
Lin Si reached out to ruffle his hair.
Β
βIncredible,β Svenya approached, asking Lin Si, βDoctor, is this the level of enhancement youβve achieved with modifications?β
βThis is a coincidence, not the result of an experiment,β Lin Si said, taking part of the data from Svenyaβs hands.
Β
Cardiopulmonary endurance, flexibility, coordination and balance, agilityβthese traits can certainly be improved through practice, but theyβre ultimately limited by innate joint and soft tissue structures. But Lin Yi was different. His soft tissue morphology had undergone significant changes. Lin Si, already familiar with Lin Yiβs assessment data from Zone 6, wasnβt particularly surprised.
Β
Yet, at this moment, an odd thought struck him. If science ceased to exist and humanity continued to mutate, evolve, and undergo natural selection, perhaps in a million years, humans might achieve such a near-perfect physiological state.
Β
Lin Yi, however, had completed the entire evolutionary process in just a few seconds of exposure to black hole radiation. Through an almost miraculous coincidence, he had achieved the optimal solution among billions of potential mutation paths.
Β
This mutation might never be replicable with current science, but it offered a possibilityβa glimpse into human evolutionβs potential. Humanityβs progress wasnβt yet at an end. While Zones 1 and 5 focused on safeguarding the species with cutting-edge technology, Zone 6 paid more attention to life itself.
Β
βIt was just a pity that βLimitlessβ couldnβt continue.
Β
And though the data was flawless, Lin Si had noticed an issue with Lin Yi over the past few days.
Β
βTest his muscle strength,β Lin Si instructed Svenya. βWhen he first woke up, he could easily break my arm, but afterward, he hasnβt displayed any abnormal strength.β
βNo abnormalities? Thatβs unlikely,β Svenya said, shaking her head. βCould it be an issue with his exertion habits? But that doesnβt seem right either.β
Β
She led Lin Yi to a simple grip strength testing device. βTry this first.β
Β
Lin Yi placed his right hand on the cylindrical grip. His hand was elegant and didnβt look particularly strong.
Β
βSqueeze as hard as you can,β Svenya instructed.
Β
His slender fingers slowly tightened. The gauge needle stopped at the center.
Β
βAverage for a normal person,β Svenya said, frowning. βBaobei, thereβs no way you only have this much strength. The moves you did on the cat tree couldnβt possibly be achieved with this level of force. Try harder. Donβt let muscle memory limit you.β
Β
Lin Yi blinked, his gaze unfocused, as if trying to feel something.
Β
His hand continued to squeeze. The needle wavered, then spun rapidly, making several full rotations!
Β
βNow, thatβs more like it,β said Svenya, satisfied. She glanced at Lin Si and playfully winked. βDoctor, youβve been overthinking it. Heβs fine.β
Β
Lin Si frowned slightly.
Β
He was certain Lin Yi hadnβt demonstrated this level of strength in daily life.
Β
He rolled up his sleeve, exposing his pale wrist, and extended it to Lin Yi. βGrip me.β
Lin Yi obediently grabbed his wrist and began squeezing.
Β
Then he looked up at Lin Si.
Β
Lin Siβs expression didnβt change. ββ¦Are you a kitten?β he asked dryly.
Β
βUse the same force as earlier,β Svenya cheered from the side. βDonβt worry, our treatment equipment is robust enough to handle even a fracture.β
Β
Lin Yi earnestly applied more pressure.
Β
Yet Lin Si still felt only a kitten-like grip.
Β
βThatβs strange,β Svenya said, rolling up her uniform sleeve. βCome here.β
Β
Lin Yi let go, leaving only a faint red mark on Lin Siβs pale wrist.
Β
βAlright, try harder,β said Svenya, coaxing him like a child.
Β
But she quickly dropped the tone.
Β
βThatβs enough, baobeiβlet go!β she gasped, her expression pained. βI think youβve fractured my bones!β
Β
Lin Yi released her, looking utterly innocent.
Β
Svenya inhaled sharply and stiffly lowered her arm. βAre you two conspiring to trick me?β
Lin Si looked at Lin Yi. βWere you really using all your strength?β
Β
Lin Yi nodded.
Β
Lin Si recalled a time when he had gone two days without replying to Lin Yiβs messages. Heβd tried to hug the dejected little creature afterward, only to be shoved back without so much as a bruise.
Β
But Svenya was clearly injuredβdespite being a βLimitlessβ modified being with extraordinary muscle strength.
Β
Lin Si realized this was beyond his expertise.
Β
He summarized the situation and sent it to Seth.
Β
Seth, βI have a bold hypothesis.β
Β
Lin Si, βLetβs hear it.β
Β
Seth, βFirst, letβs test it with a small experiment.β
Β
Lin Yi was blindfolded.
Β
Lin Si stood among a scattered group of soldiers.
Β
Lin Yi wandered aimlessly at first. But when he was about three to four meters away from Lin Si, he stopped, then headed straight for him, diving into his arms.
Β
Lin Si hugged him back, patted him, and removed the blindfold. βHow did you know it was me?β
Β
βI just felt you were there,β Lin Yi replied.
Β
Lin Si updated Seth, βHe found me.β
Β
Seth responded, βDoctor, congratulations. You might have unlocked an infinite imprinting phenomenon!β
Β
A moment later, another, more formal message followed, βThis has precedence. Several animal species display similar behavior. Juveniles within a certain range of an adult blood relative are influenced by an as-yet-unverified pheromonal signal, rendering them completely non-aggressive. Your little oneβs situation seems very similar.β
Β
Lin Si stroked the little creatureβs hair.
Β
The little one was calm and obedient.
Β
Lin Si felt content.
Β
This warm, breathing life in his arms had voluntarily formed a connection with him.
Β
For a moment, he, too, didnβt want to let goβthough he knew this bond might only exist due to some strange genetic mutation in Lin Yi.
